Things to Know About Medicare Supplement Insurance
Medicare Supplement Insurance, often called Medigap, is private insurance designed to help cover costs that Original Medicare (Parts A and B) does not fully pay. These out-of-pocket expenses can include deductibles, copayments, coinsurance, and certain emergency costs when traveling outside the U.S. Homestead Insurance Agency offers medicare supplements in North Royalton, Medina, OH, Litchfield, OH, Brunswick, OH, Middleburg Heights, Valley City, OH and nearby areas.
- One important thing to know is that Medigap works only with Original Medicare. If you have a Medicare Advantage (Part C) plan, you cannot use a Medigap policy at the same time. Medigap simply fills the “gaps” in Original Medicare; it does not replace it.
- Medigap plans are standardized and labeled by letters (such as Plan G or Plan N). Each lettered plan offers the same benefits regardless of the insurance company selling it, although premiums can vary. For example, a Plan G from one insurer must provide the same coverage as Plan G from another—pricing, customer service, and discounts are where companies differ.
- Timing matters. Your Medigap Open Enrollment Period starts when you are 65 or older and enrolled in Medicare Part B, and it lasts six months. During this window, you can buy any Medigap plan available in your state without medical underwriting. After this period, insurers may charge more or deny coverage based on health conditions.
- Medigap policies generally do not cover prescription drugs, dental, vision, hearing aids, or long-term care. Prescription coverage is handled separately through Medicare Part D plans.
- Costs are another key consideration. You’ll pay a monthly premium for Medigap in addition to your Part B premium. However, many people value the predictable costs, since Medigap can significantly reduce surprise medical bills.
- Finally, Medigap plans typically allow you to see any doctor nationwide who accepts Medicare, without referrals. For people who travel frequently or want broad provider access and stable out-of-pocket costs, a Medicare Supplement plan can be a strong option.
